It is easy to think that whatever happens in your mouth, stays in your mouth. We may not talk about the link between your mouth and other parts of your body a ton in the dental world, but the link is there and today we will be talking about how poor oral hygiene can affect your heart.
Bad Habits Don't affect Just Your Teeth
While more research is needed when it comes to oral bacteria having an effect on your heart. There is a much clearer understanding that bad habits that cause poor hygiene can also cause heart problems.
For example, excessive eating of food and beverages that are poor for your teeth such as sugary treats and soda can cause weight gain potentially leading to diabetes, which has a connection to heart disease.
Another point is smoking- a habit which puts people at high risk for gum disease. In addition to the negative oral consequences, smoking also affects the heart negatively by increasing blood pressure, which strains both your heart and blood vessels. High blood pressure risks the user of a heart attack or a stroke if allowed to get out of control.
