One thing you'll always hear from us is how important it is to brush your teeth. Brushing your teeth twice a day stops bacteria from forming in your mouth. These bacteria multiply because of the leftover food in our mouths. While these bacteria like to eat our leftovers, they also like to eat our teeth. If the bacteria in our mouth aren't removed, they can cause tooth decay or other dental problems. Though brushing is important, is it possible to brush too long? Yes, you can brush too much. It may seem strange. However, brushing too much can actually cause a lot of damage to your teeth. Why Brushing Too Much Causes Tooth DamageOur teeth are strong. However, you can still damage the outer layer of your tooth by brushing too long. The outer layer of the tooth is known as enamel. When you brush your teeth, you can remove small amounts of enamel. There's no need to worry, though. The amount of enamel removed is so small it doesn't matter. When you brush too long, however, you remove more enamel than necessary.Brushing too much every now and then is okay. However, it's bad to brush too much too often. Over a year, you could be removing a ton of enamel. To avoid damaging your enamel, we recommend only brushing your teeth for 2 minutes. While you brush, try to brush gently and let the bristles of the toothbrush do the work. Over brushing can cause tooth sensitivity. As enamel wears, the sensitive nerves inside your teeth become exposed. Tooth enamel can't grow back. Once it's gone, it's gone for good. In most cases, we can correct sensitive teeth. If you are suffering from sensitive teeth, please call our office so we can help you. While you're here, we can even help you with your brushing technique. |
