Why Some People Go Years Between Dental Appointments

In the perfect world, our patients would show their faces in our offices every six months, rain or shine, for their routine checkup and cleanings. However, we live in the real world, which means that skipped appointments are a fairly regular occurrence.
The fact is, missing a dental appointment can be a dangerous mistake. Routine dental exams aren't just about keeping your smile dazzling and bright; they can also help prevent dangerous complications in your mouth to take hold that can put your teeth and your health at risk.
The Three Main Reasons Patients No-Show Their Dental Appointments
We'll be honest: it bums us out when a scheduled patient doesn't keep their appointment. We understand that sometimes things come up and you may occasionally reschedule your appointment, but regular dental exams are a key cornerstone in taking care of your oral health.
These are the top three reasons that we often encounter when we have a patient miss a dental exam:
They did not realize it was important. Many of our patients mistakenly believe that you only need to come see us when they have a dental emergency. When there is no pain, then to them, there is no problem. That could not be further than the truth! Regular dental appointments are vital to help prevent problems like toothaches. Do not wait until you have a problem, because by then, it might be too late.
They cannot get away from work. Taking time out of your busy schedule can be a challenge, especially when you are juggling work and raising a family and trying to keep up a personal life, too. Many employers understand allow time off work for health appointments, so plan ahead and book your appointment early to be sure you can get the time off. If you cannot keep it, just let us know in advance and we will be happy to reschedule you!
They are afraid of us. This is typically the number one reason that a patient may skip an appointment. We are not scary, we promise! And staying on top of routine exams with cleanings is actually a great way to keep your fear to a minimum because we will be better equipped to catch an issue before it becomes a bigger problem. If you have anxiety about seeing us, just let us know. We will work with you to keep your fear at bay. If you prefer, we can sedate you, or you can choose to listen to relaxing music during your appointment. Either way, please do not let a phobia keep you away!
Your reasons for missing your appointment are personal to you, and we understand why it may occasionally happen.
It's important, though, to make sure you keep your scheduled exams. If it's been longer than six months since your last dental appointment, please give the skilled and gentle staff here at our office a call today to set up your comprehensive exam and cleaning!
